Explore Chromate Conversion Coating for Maximum Corrosion Resistance

What Is Chromate Conversion Coating?

Chromate conversion coating is a chemical process applied to aluminum and other metal surfaces to enhance corrosion resistance, improve paint adhesion, and maintain electrical conductivity.

At MYT Machining, we offer both trivalent and hexavalent chromate coatings, compliant with industry standards, including MIL-DTL-5541 Type II chromate. This is a popular surface finish in the aerospace, defense, automotive, and electronics sectors, where conductivity and durability are key factors.

Benefits of Chromate Coating

Our chromate coating service is engineered to meet high-performance demands while being environmentally compliant. Key Advantages include:

  • Excellent corrosion resistance
  • Retention of electrical conductivity
  • Able to be secondary processed
  • Trivalent and hexavalent forms are both available

Applications of Conversion Coating

This coating is perfect for:

  • Aerospace parts
  • Defense components
  • Electronic housings
  • Accurate machined aluminum finish surfaces
  • Industrial and automotive brackets

Whether you require trivalent conversion chromate coating for RoHS compliance or the Cronak chromate process for zinc, MYT Machining delivers consistent results with tight process control.

All You Need to Know About Chromate Conversion Coating Process

Our highly trained technicians handle a quality and consistent process. Process Overview includes the following details:

  • Cleaning and Surface Preparation
  • Chromate conversion bath immersion
  • Zinc time concentration controlled
  • Drying and checked

The entire process meets or exceeds requirements outlined in MIL-DTL-5541 Type II chromate and passes rigorous chromate conversion salt spray test data benchmarks.

Hexavalent vs Trivalent Chromate Coating

Here at MYT Machining, we have both types based on your application needs:

Properties of Hexavalent Chromate:

  • Traditional standard
  • Better corrosion resistance
  • A little more poisonous; prohibited in a few localities;

Properties of Trivalent Chromate:

  • RoHS compliant
  • Safest and eco-friendliest
  • Electronic and aerospace applications
  • Hassled to endure severe conditions.

We ensure our chromate coatings pass standardized corrosion tests, including:

Our chromate conversion salt spray test data supports durability in extreme conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Chromate Conversion Coating

  • How thick is the coating?

Very thin, usually 0.00001" to 0.00004". It adds negligible thickness, making it suitable for close-tolerance parts

  • What’s the typical color of chromate-coated parts?

Hexavalent coatings appear gold or iridescent yellow. Trivalent coatings are clear or slightly bluish.

  • Does it affect the electrical conductivity of aluminum parts?

No. In fact, chromate conversion coatings are valued for maintaining electrical conductivity, which is why they’re used in EMI/RFI shielding applications.

  • Can chromate coating be used as a final finish?

Yes, it can act as a standalone corrosion-resistant finish, but it's also commonly used as a primer before painting or powder coating.

  • Is chromate conversion coating RoHS compliant?

Only trivalent (Type II) coatings are RoHS compliant. MYT Machining offers both options depending on your regulatory needs.
