MYT specializes in high-precision CNC machining, turning your concepts into functional, high-quality parts with speed and accuracy. Equipped with advanced technology and skilled craftsmanship, we deliver production-ready components that meet your exact specifications, regardless of complexity.
In industries where both corrosion resistance and appearance matter, Black Oxide is one of the most widely used surface finishing treatments. Durable, uniform, and cost-effective, this conversion coating enhances the function and appearance of ferrous metals without adding thickness or compromising tight tolerances.
At MYT Machining, we offer professional Black Oxide finishing for steel and stainless steel parts—ideal for applications in tooling, firearms, machinery, and more.
What is Black Oxide?
Black Oxide, also known as blackening or black passivating, is a chemical conversion coating formed by a reaction between the metal surface and an oxidizing solution. The result is a thin layer of magnetite (Fe₃O₄) that gives the part a deep black appearance while improving corrosion resistance, reducing glare, and minimizing light reflection.
Unlike paint or plating, this finish doesn’t build up or flake—it becomes part of the metal surface.
How the Black Oxide Process Works
Cleaning & Degreasing: The part is thoroughly cleaned to remove oils, rust, and contaminants.
Blackening Bath: The component is immersed in a hot alkaline salt solution (typically at 285°F) that converts the surface layer into magnetite.
Rinsing & Sealing: After blackening, parts are rinsed and treated with a protective sealant (oil, wax, or polymer) to enhance corrosion resistance.
The entire process is relatively fast and ideal for parts with intricate geometries or tight tolerances.
Perks of Black Oxide Finishing
At MYT Machining, we apply Black Oxide finishes that combine function and form:
Corrosion Resistance: Enhanced when combined with oil or wax sealants.
Dimensional Stability: Coating is <0.000030″ thick—ideal for tight-tolerance parts.
Reduced Light Glare: Perfect for tools, optics, and tactical gear.
Improved Lubricity: Reduces wear and galling in moving components.
Enhanced Appearance: Sleek matte black aesthetic.
Cost-Efficient: Lower in cost than plating or painting.
Common Applications of Black Oxide
Due to its reliable performance and consistent appearance, Black Oxide is popular across several industries:
Tooling & Dies: To reduce glare and wear.
Firearms & Tactical Gear: Non-reflective, corrosion-resistant coating.
Fasteners & Fittings: Clean finish with lubricity.
Mechanical Components: Gears, bushings, and shafts with wear and corrosion protection.
Decorative Hardware: Handles, brackets, and fixtures.

Periodic oiling is recommended to maintain corrosion resistance, especially in humid or abrasive environments.
Yes, but it requires a special formulation. MYT Machining provides Black Oxide finishing for both carbon and stainless steels.
Not typically. Black Oxide with oil or wax sealants is not considered safe for food or medical contact. Specialized coatings would be better suited.
Yes, but the finish near the weld zone may be affected. It’s generally better to weld first and finish afterward.
It offers moderate corrosion resistance when sealed with oil or wax, but for harsh outdoor environments, additional coatings or stainless steel may be better.
