O1 tool steel is usually annealed to a hardness of 197 HB, and is then good as a machine and subsequently heat-treated.
They are both cold work steels, with O1 being easier to machine and grind, but with A2 being tougher, and thus harder to cut.
Yes. The annealed O1 steel is an excellent machining grade, and subsequently may be heat-treated to suit application up to ~62 HRC.
The annealed O1 can be machined surface finish of a clean, smooth surface and particularly when incorporated as a fine ground surface or polished after machining.
The grade is of good thermal conductivity and thus it can be used in processes that need effective heat generation the processes as cutting or forming (~24 W/m-K).
