Tool Steel D2 | 1.2379 | X153CrMoV12-1 – Annealed state is a top-tier cold-worked tool steel known for its superior wear resistance, toughness, and dimensional stability. It has been pre-annealed to maximize machinability and helps fulfill the need to make high-precision CNC components in which consistency and durability are of utmost importance.
In the annealed position, Tool Steel D2 | 1.2379 | X153CrMoV12-1 has good machinability and is therefore used to produce complex CNC parts with tight tolerances. Machining X153CrMoV12-1 in this state lowers tool wear and increases accuracy.
Comparing D2 vs H13 steel CNC parts, D2 excels in wear resistance and edge retention, while H13 is better for high-temperature applications. D2 blows away everything in the cold work and cutting tool applications, especially in the annealed condition.
Hardness annealed D2 steel typically ranges around 200-230 HB. This is simpler to machine prior to heat treatment, and it is perfect for producing custom components through CNC. D2 has a hardness of up to 60 HRC after heat-treatment, which is appropriate when there is a need to make long-lived dies and tools.
A refined surface finish on D2 tool steel can be achieved using proper cutting fluids, speeds, and finishing tools. With its fine-grain structure, it can be polished to a near mirror finish and is suitable for injection molds and precision tooling.
Thanks to its dimensional stability, D2 tool steel CNC tolerances are excellent, often reaching ±0.01 mm. Tight-fit assemblies, molds, and complicated machine parts require this precision.
In order to machine this grade optimally:
Apply carbide cutters that have a high cutting speed
Proper cutting parameters for D2 tool steel prolong tool life and enhance surface quality.

A: D2 is applied to cold-worked tools, dies, and components CNC machined that need to be highly wear-resistant and edge retention resistant.
A: Annealed D2 steel is again normally annealed, following which the hardness of 200-230 HB can easily be machined before hardening.
A: Although D2 has great wear resistance, it can be more appropriate to apply H13 in a high-heat environment.
A: Both D2 and many other cold-work tool steels are outclassed by D2 in terms of dimensional stability, surface finish, and hardness.
A: Yes, to make them hard and durable in cutting, heat treatment after machining increases the hardness up to 60 HRC.
